Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment and this will we do, if God permit. Hebrews 6:1-3
Our new life in Christ is a path of ongoing growth, and personal development. As new believers we have opportunities to mature and enjoy the grace of God at different levels. The author of Hebrews makes a reference to a list of teachings that Christ cemented during his ministry, he then proceeds to say that though these teaching are important, they are only the foundation or beginning of our walk. The basic teachings of Christ include:
repentance from dead works
faith toward God
instruction about baptisms and the laying on of hands
the resurrection of the dead
In Hebrews chapter 13 these teachings are referred as elementary or basic teachings in the believer’s life, and urges the reader to progress toward maturity. What is spiritual maturity? and how it is achieved?
The rest of Hebrews chapter 13 focuses on 3 aspects of spiritual maturity, these are:
v.4-5 perseverance in holiness, maturity is demonstrated by our personal objection to sin and determination to a life secluded of evil.
v.9 constancy in our commitment to serve even in the mist of difficult and impossible circumstances, our hope is knowing that we serve faithful in rewarder.
v.13 steadfastness on our walk and in our calling will unleash the promises of God in our lives. The constancy or fidelity of our lives will give us access to blessings that are already available in the form of promises.
One of the great attributes of maturity is mastering fidelity in the different aspects of our life, the apostle Paul instructed us that even our yes be yes and our no be no. It is necessary that as children of God and citizens of his Kingdom, we advance from elementary teachings to maturity. It is in the maturity that we will find the blessings we both need and desire.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity you give us to grow in your knowledge and wisdom. We come before you asking for renewed courage and wisdom to understand and accept the challenge of being steadfast in our walk and service unto you. We call onto you to strengthen us in our attempt to be faithful and courageous, that our yes be yes and our no be no. To you be glory and honor, Lord! Amen
